History

The Air New Zealand Sports & Social Club (Northern)  was formed 66 years ago on the 13th April, 1955 with the Southern and Central Clubs being formed some months later.

Each division of the company had representation on the Committee. In those early days Air New Zealand also had Clubs in Invercargill, Dunedin, Tauranga, Nelson,  Palmerston North, Nelson, Blenheim, Hamilton, Hawkes Bay, New Plymouth and Wanganui!

The Northern Club has always been extremely active and had several sports sub clubs associated to it – Skiing, Outdoors and Sailing as well as Bowls, Badminton, Tennis, Squash, and Table Tennis Clubs.

For many years the Club has participated in the World Airlines Games traveling internationally to London, Singapore, Sweden, Tahiti, Japan and most recently to Australia for the Games. As well as hosting tournaments in Auckland and Christchurch, the Club has had teams take part in tournaments overseas - table tennis in Paris, squash in Germany, tennis in Fiji, and bowls in Brisbane to name a few!

The Annual Christmas Parties were the highlight of the year! These were held in the big Hangar with plenty of ice cream and lollies, fun and games for the kids. Father Christmas would fly in, taxi to the hangar and climb from the forward hatch to hand out presents to all the children!  Wouldn’t it be fabulous if we could do that again?!

Our Social Events over the years have ranged from Black Tie Balls, corporate tents at Round the Bays, Quiz nights, Cinema evenings, trips to the Zoo, bbq’s and picnics on Rangitoto, Dolphin watching trips, and of course the ever popular Rainbow's End!
